The <em>capital of the north<\/em>, Groningen is the largest place as well as the economic and cultural centre of the northern part of the country; as of December 2021, it had 235,287 inhabitants, making it the sixth largest city\/municipality in the Netherlands and the second largest outside the Randstad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/designjaap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/architecture-Groningen-DSC_9018-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-129351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/designjaap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/architecture-Groningen-DSC_9018-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/designjaap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/architecture-Groningen-DSC_9018-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/designjaap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/architecture-Groningen-DSC_9018-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/designjaap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/architecture-Groningen-DSC_9018.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Akerk Groningen<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/designjaap.com\/?page_id=129337\">Groningen<\/a> was established more than 950 years ago and gained city rights in 1245.Due to its relatively isolated location from the then successive Dutch centres of power (Utrecht, The<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Hague\"> <\/a>Hague, Brussels), Groningen was historically reliant on itself and nearby regions. As a Hanseatic city, it was part of the North German trade network, but later it mainly became a regional market centre. At the height of its power in the 15th century, Groningen could be considered an independent city-state and it remained autonomous until the French era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today <a href=\"https:\/\/designjaap.com\/?page_id=129337\">Groningen<\/a> is a university city, home to some of the country&#8217;s leading higher education institutes; University of Groningen (<em>Rijksuniversiteit Groningen<\/em>), which is the Netherlands&#8217;s second oldest university (1614), and Hanze University of Applied Sciences (<em>Hanzehogeschool Groningen<\/em>).
