The historic town center has many preserved half-timbered houses and narrow streets have remained nearly unchanged for 300 years, making the town a popular tourist attraction nowadays. An open-air, classical music festival is staged annually at Burg Monschau. Historically, the main industry of the town was cloth-mills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/designjaap.com\/?page_id=125396\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/designjaap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/architecture-Monschau-DSC_5068-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-125471\" srcset=\"https:\/\/designjaap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/architecture-Monschau-DSC_5068-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/designjaap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/architecture-Monschau-DSC_5068-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/designjaap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/architecture-Monschau-DSC_5068-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/designjaap.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/architecture-Monschau-DSC_5068.jpg 1444w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/designjaap.com\/?page_id=125396\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"117643\">Monschau<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the heights above the city is Monschau castle, which dates back to the 13th century \u2014 the first mention of <a href=\"https:\/\/designjaap.com\/?page_id=125396\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"117643\">Monschau<\/a> was made in 1198. Beginning in 1433, the castle was used as a seat of the dukes of&nbsp;J\u00fclich. In 1543, Emperor&nbsp;Charles V&nbsp;besieged it as part of the&nbsp;Guelders Wars, captured it and plundered the town. However, the castle stayed with J\u00fclich until 1609, when it became part of&nbsp;Palatinate-Neuburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1795, the&nbsp;French&nbsp;captured the area and, under the name&nbsp;<em>Montjoie<\/em>, made it the capital of a canton of the&nbsp;Roer d\u00e9partement.
